Things to Do This Weekend in San Diego: Jan. 4-7


Kick off the new year with a little bit of fitness, home improvement, art and music across the county. Oh, and there's a little something called "Hamilton" taking over the San Diego Civic Theatre, no big deal. Get up. Get out. Play!
Thursday, Jan. 4
Beach Spin
7:30 a.m., Hotel Del Coronado
Change up your morning workout with this oceanfront spin class on the Paseo Lawn at the Hotel Del Coronado. The 50-minute class is led by instructors and includes high-energy music and stunning views. It costs $15 for San Diego County residents, with a valid photo ID, and $25 for non-residents.
Rady Children’s Ice Rink
10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Liberty Station
If you haven’t gone ice skating in sunny San Diego yet this season, this is your final chance. The Rady Children’s Ice Rink, located at 2875 Dewey Rd. at Liberty Station, is open through this Sunday. Skating costs $12 for kids age 12 and younger, $14 for adults and $10 for military each day, which includes skate rentals.
Global Winter Wonderland Heads to San DiegoGlobal Winter Wonderland Heads to San Diego
Global Winter Wonderland, a traveling holiday attraction, is setting up in San Diego for the first time this season. Featuring light displays aplenty, carnival rides and more, the attraction is open Nov. 19 through Jan. 7 at SDCCU Stadium.

Beauty or Torture: Society’s Demand of Perfection Examined
12 p.m. to 4 p.m., Women’s Museum of California
This exhibition at the Women’s Museum of California at Liberty Station explores the timeless quest for beauty and the lengths women have gone to over the centuries to alter their looks to conform to society’s beauty standards of the time. The exhibition takes a look at weird beauty trends and how routines weren’t always pretty. Admission is $5. “Beauty or Torture: Society’s Demand of Perfection Examined,” is on display at the museum through Jan. 28, 2018.
The Chocolate Adventure Series: Truffle Rolling
3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Chuao Chocolatier JOY Factory & HQChuao Chocolatier in Carlsbad (2350 Camino Vida Roble) launches its “Chocolate Adventure Series” with this class focused on the art of truffle rolling. Students will learn to roll their own Wild Truffles and will also be treated to a tour of the chocolatier’s Joy Factory. You get to take home whatever sweets you make, too. The class costs $60; attendees must wear flat, close-toed shoes to be admitted to the factory.
Global Winter Wonderland: ‘Circus of Light’
5 p.m. to 10 p.m., SDCCU Stadium
This 17-acre holiday festival lit up San Diego for the first time ever this season and if you haven’t checked it out yet, this weekend is your final chance. The family-friendly Global Winter Wonderland – located in the parking lot of SDCCU Stadium – features the largest display of traditional Chinese lanterns outside of China, plus acrobatics performances, carnival rides, holiday-themed activities, games, food and shopping. The internationally-influenced event is open through this Sunday, from either 4:30 p.m. or 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. or 11 p.m. Tickets cost $22 for adults and $19 for kids ages 4 to 12 or senior citizens age 62 and older. Kids 3 and under get in free.
Zumba Fitness Fun
6:30 p.m., Harrah’s Resort Southern California
This energizing Zumba class goes down each Thursday on the second-floor South Tower at Harrah’s Resort SoCal. The movin’ and groovin’ starts at 6:30 p.m.

Friday, Jan. 5
San Diego Spring Home Show
11 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Friday through Sunday), San Diego Convention Center
Get inspired to tackle those home improvement projects in the New Year at the San Diego Spring Home Show taking place Friday (11 a.m. to 8 p.m.), Saturday (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) at the San Diego Convention Center. The expo features exhibitors in every home improvement arena – from bathroom remodeling and solar panels to experts in outdoor spaces. Entry to the Home Show is free.
Whale Watching Aboard America
11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Maritime Museum of San Diego
Experience San Diego’s whale watching season aboard America, a 138-foot sailing yacht that launches from the Maritime Museum. This 4-hour tour cruises the coastline on a quest to view the sea creatures. Light snacks and beverages are included in the ticket price, plus admission to the Maritime Museum of San Diego before or after the cruise. Tickets range from $42.50 to $85, with discounts for active duty and retired military. Check-in is 30 minutes before your departure time at the booth in front of the Berkeley Steam Ferry.
Santiago Quesnel
1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Lux Art Institute
The works of visiting Argentinian artist Santiago Quesnel are currently on exhibit at Lux Art Institute in Encinitas (1550 South El Camino Real). Quesnel’s paintings are inspired by the memories and layered landscapes of his hometown of Buenos Aires. His art is on display at the Lux’s Artist Pavilion through Feb. 17, which is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. Admission to the Lux is $5 for adults and free for children ages 18 and younger. If you ride your bike there, you get in free, too.
Friday Night Liberty: New Year, New Art
5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Arts District at Liberty StationThe Arts District at Liberty Station (2640 Decatur Rd.) hosts Friday Night Liberty, a monthly art walk showcasing the working artists, dance, music and theatre that are helping the district grow in its mission to highlight the arts culture in San Diego. The event is free. This month’s theme is “New Year, New Art!”
Cardio Samba (Brazil)
6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Crown Dance Studio
Power up your 2018 workout routine with this high-energy class at Crown Dance Studio (6904 Miramar Rd.). Gladys Altafani, a Sambista of the Brazilian Carnivale, leads fun every Friday. Drop-in classes cost $20; if you sign up for a membership, the price drops by a few dollars.

San Diego Gulls vs. San Jose Barracuda

The San Diego Gulls take on the San Jose Barracuda Friday night at Valley View Casino Center in the home team’s first game of 2018. The puck drops at 7 p.m.; tickets start at $23.
Hops on the Harbor Dinner Cruise
7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Flagship Cruises & Events
Enjoy a dinner cruise around the San Diego Bay paired with craft beers from local favorite, Bay City Brewing. The menu for this installment of Hops on the Harbor includes four 6-ounce beer tastings expertly matched with courses. For instance, the Bay City’s Fiesta Island Pilsner will be paired with shrimp etouffee, creole rice and wilted greens, while the Power Play IPA will be paired with lasagna primavera, winter spinach salad and garlic bread. Also on the brew menu: Hazy IPA and Coffee Pale Ale. The dinner cruise boards at 7 p.m. from 990 North Harbor Dr. and sails past the San Diego skyline, USS Midway, Star of India and other Maritime Museum ships and the Coronado Bay Bridge. Yoga + Beer

Start your Saturday morning with a yoga session – with a crafty twist. Eppig Brewing’s tasting room (3052 El Cajon Blvd.) will play host to a 60-minute Vinyasa flow that welcomes yogis of all skill levels. After the session, students can stick around for an Eppig beer. Hamilton: An American Musical
2 p.m. & 8 p.m., San Diego Civic Theatre
This is finally your shot, San Diego. The famed, Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, “Hamilton,” takes over downtown’s Civic Theatre this month, with performances Jan. 6 through Jan. 28. Opening Day includes two shows – 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. – which, as you guessed, are sold out, as is the rest of the San Diego tour. Still, we’d be remiss if we didn’t tell you this hit was coming through town – and you’d wonder why the crowds near the theatre were so big. The Hamilton app is offering a digital lottery-type system where fans can enter for a chance to buy orchestra tickets for $10. “Hamilton” is the brainchild of Lin-Manuel Miranda, based on Ron Chernow’s biography of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Its trailblazing score blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and Broadway as it unravels the story of America – then and now.
Willie Nelson and Family With Special Guest Lukas Nelson
8 p.m., Harrah’s Resort Southern California
It’s a family affair at Harrah’s Resort Southern California Saturday night as music legend Willie Nelson jams with his son, Lukas Nelson. Willie will bring his iconic sound to the stage at the Events Center – and all of his hits. Tickets to this 21+ concert start at $65 but they will likely sell out.is
Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild Live!
6:30 p.m., California Center for the Arts Escondido
Join wildlife ambassador “Jungle Jack Hanna” for this live, family-friendly stage show in Escondido. “Into the Wild Live!” includes stories and footage from Hanna’s animal adventures across the globe (i.e.: brushing a hippo’s teeth, dining with wombats), plus cameos from an array of furry friends like cheetahs, kangaroos and more. Tickets range from $25 to $60.
San Diego Gulls vs. San Jose Barracuda

The San Diego Gulls take on the San Jose Barracuda once more on Saturday. Head over to the Valley View Casino Center to root for our home team. Tickets start at $23.
Cinema Under the Stars: Winter & Spring Season
8 p.m. Cinema Under the Stars (Mission Hills)
Enjoy a movie under the stars at this outdoor theater on Goldfinch Street in Mission Hills. The winter/spring screening season kicks off Friday night with a movie playing at 8 p.m. Now through April 29, movies will screen each Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. Check the Cinema Under the Stars website for a schedule of which movies are playing when throughout the season.

Guided Nature Walk
9:30 a.m., Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center
Join a trail guide from Mission Trails Regional Park (MTRP) on this free, 1.5-hour nature walk and learn about the plants, animals, geology, history and ecology of the park. The walk begins at the Visitor Center and will head out to one of three scenic trails: The Oak Grove Loop, The Visitor Center Loop, or The Riverside Grinding Rocks. These walks are typically held at MTRP every Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. Wear close-toed shoes and sunscreen, and bring water.
Live Music Sundays: The Counterfeits
12 p.m. to 3 p.m., Liberty Public MarketTake in this free Sunday concert in the patio at Liberty Public Market featuring local group, The Counterfeits. The feel-good band will jam to top 40 covers and their own original songs as visitors enjoy food, drinks and shopping at the marketplace.

A Culture Shock Nutcracker
1 p.m. & 6 p.m., Spreckels TheatreThis is not your parent’s production of “The Nutcracker.” Culture Shock San Diego takes the stage at downtown’s Spreckels Theatre this weekend for five inventive, modern-day performances of the classic play. This show features Tchaikovsky’s original score fused with contemporary music and pop culture references, plus a mix of dance genres. Sunday’s performances include a 1 p.m. matinee and a 6 p.m. closing show; tickets range from $15 to $45.
Free Concert at Mission Trails

Soul Sunday: 1-Year Anniversary Show6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., Public Square Coffee HousePublic Square Coffee House (8278 La Mesa Blvd.) celebrates its first anniversary as a La Mesa Village business with an intimate concert Sunday night showcasing local neo-soul, funk and jazz artists. A $10 ticket gets you into the show and includes a beer, glass of wine or drink from the coffee bar.
