Thursday, Feb. 1
Beach Spin
7:30 a.m., Hotel Del Coronado
Change up your morning workout with this oceanfront spin class on the Paseo Lawn at the Hotel Del Coronado. The 50-minute class is led by instructors and includes high-energy music and stunning views. It costs $15 for San Diego County residents, with a valid photo ID, and $25 for non-residents.
Shen Yun
2 p.m., California Center for the Arts Escondido
Performing arts company, Shen Yun, brings its lively, colorful show to the stage at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. The show features classical Chinese dance, ethnic and folk dance, and story-based dance, with orchestral accompaniment and solo performers, to tell tales of ancient legends and modern heroes spanning 5,000 years of Chinese culture. Tickets cost $80. Shen Yun moves to downtown’s San Diego Civic Theatre the rest of the weekend, with five more shows at that venue Friday through Sunday.

First Thursday at The Lafayette
6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., The Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club & Bungalows
San Diego Made, an artists’ collective organization that aims to increase awareness of the arts in San Diego, hosts its free monthly pop-up event, “First Thursday,” at The Lafayette. The event features handmade goodies from more than 30 local artists, plus music, Happy Hour specials and activities like a free coloring station for kids and adults, love-themed henna tattoos, a free photo booth, outdoor courtyard games and raffles. For a $45 fee, attendees can also partake in a Block Printing Workshop led by Little Prints Fabric Studio in which they will learn to create printed motifs to adorn items like tote bags, tea towels, labels, postcards and posters. 
Zumba Fitness Fun
6:30 p.m., Harrah’s Resort Southern CaliforniaThis energizing Zumba class goes down each Thursday on the second-floor South Tower at Harrah’s Resort SoCal. The movin’ and groovin’ starts at 6:30 p.m.

California Creation Myth6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., San Diego History CenterKumeyaay historian and educator Michael Connolly Miskwish, M.A., and Theresa Gregor, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of American Indian Studies at CSU Long Beach, lead this seminar at the San Diego History Center in Balboa Park focusing on how Spanish revivalism, a book called “Ramona,” and real estate speculators created a mythology that overwhelmed California and consigned Kumeyaay to a footnote for 100 years. The seminar is free, but seating is limited, so attendees are required to RSVP ahead of time online.
San Diego Winds Chamber Concert
7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Point Loma Nazarene University
San Diego Winds presents a chamber concert at the Crill Performance Hall at Point Loma Nazarene University. The concert features the talents of the Stravinsky Octet, conducted by Gregg Hanson, performing works by Childs, Francaix, Milhaud and Stravinsky. Tickets cost $10.

Circus Vargas

Gather ‘round the big top, San Diego – Circus Vargas’s continues its run at Westfield Mission Valley. The traveling show boasts thrilling performances by acrobats, daredevils, flying trapeze artists, jugglers, contortionists, comics and more. This time around, the Circus Vargas theme is “Dreaming of Pirates,” so attendees can expect some swashbuckling surprises. Take the family 30 minutes before show time and enjoy a special, free pre-show where kids can create their own magic under the big top. Tickets range from $15 to $72; kids age 2 and under get in free with a paying adult, so long as they sit on an adult’s lap. Circus Vargas will be at Westfield Mission Valley through Feb. 5 before moving on to Westfield Plaza Bonita on Feb. 8.
Badfish: A Tribute to Sublime
8 p.m., House of Blues
Badfish: A Tribute to Sublime hits the House of Blues in downtown San Diego Thursday night. The Rhode Island-based tribute band is dedicated to playing the songs of Sublime that defined the 1990s. Tickets to this 18+ show range from $20 to $45.
The Stone Foxes
9:30 p.m., The CasbahSan Francisco-based rock band, The Stone Foxes, plan to rock The Casbah Thursday night. The group, founded by brother Shannon and Spence Koehler has deep California roots; the brothers are originally from the Sierra Nevada foothills near Tollhouse, California. Tickets to the show start at $16.
Friday, Feb. 2
Whale Watching Aboard America
11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Maritime Museum of San DiegoExperience San Diego’s whale watching season aboard America, a 138-foot sailing yacht that launches from the Maritime Museum. This 4-hour tour cruises the coastline on a quest to view the sea creatures. Light snacks and beverages are included in the ticket price, plus admission to the Maritime Museum of San Diego before or after the cruise. Tickets range from $42.50 to $85, with discounts for active duty and retired military. Check-in is 30 minutes before your departure time at the booth in front of the Berkeley Steam Ferry.

The San Diego-based nonprofit organization, Friends of Balboa Park, recently purchased the historic Balboa Park Carousel located off Park Boulevard. The group plans to restore the ride to its glory days and keep it running for generations to come. The carousel was built in 1910 and boasts all of its original parts. Santiago Quesnel
1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Lux Art Institute
The works of visiting Argentinian artist Santiago Quesnel are currently on exhibit at Lux Art Institute in Encinitas (1550 South El Camino Real). Quesnel’s paintings are inspired by the memories and layered landscapes of his hometown of Buenos Aires. His art is on display at the Lux’s Artist Pavilion through Feb. 17, which is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays. Admission to the Lux is $5 for adults and free for children ages 18 and younger. If you ride your bike there, you get in free, too.
Friday Night Liberty
5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Arts District at Liberty Station
The Arts District at Liberty Station (2640 Decatur Rd.) hosts Friday Night Liberty, a monthly art walk showcasing the working artists, dance, music and theatre that are helping the district grow in its mission to highlight the arts culture in San Diego. The event is free. This month’s theme is “Love the Arts.” The evening will include performances from Malashock Dance & The Malashock Dance School in the Abbe Wolfsheimer Studio at the Dorothea Laub Dance Palace at 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Cardio Samba (Brazil)6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Crown Dance StudioPower up your workout routine with this high-energy class at Crown Dance Studio (6904 Miramar Rd.). Gladys Altafani, a Sambista of the Brazilian Carnivale, leads fun every Friday. Drop-in classes cost $20; if you sign up for a membership, the price drops by a few dollars.
Hops on the Harbor
7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Flagship Cruises & Events
Enjoy a craft beer dinner cruise around the San Diego Bay paired with brews from North Park favorite, Thorn Street Brewing. The menu for this installment of “Hops on the Harbor” includes four 6-ounce, malt-forward beer tastings expertly matched with courses. For instance, Thorn Street Brewing’s West Coast-style Relay IPA will be paired with chipotle BBQ chicken, baked macaroni and cheese and steamed broccolini with toasted garlic. Also on the brew menu: Thorn’s Barrio Lager, 007 English pale ale, and Abbey Wall. The dinner cruise boards at 7 p.m. from 990 North Harbor Dr. and sails past the San Diego skyline, USS Midway, Star of India and other Maritime Museum ships and the Coronado Bay Bridge. Enjoy the laid-back vibes of “Reggae Fridays” at Fast Times, a relatively new restaurant and bar in Clairemont (3065 Clairemont Dr.). The weekly event includes music from DJ J-Roots and local reggae musicians.
Tyler, The Creator
7:30 p.m., Valley View Casino Center
Popular American rapper, Tyler, The Creator, stops by San Diego’s Valley View Casino Center amid his North American tour in support of this new album, “Flower Boy.” General admission tickets start at $39.50; parking at the venue will cost $20.
The Addams Family: A New Musical
8 p.m. to 10 p.m., The Coronado Playhouse
They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re altogether ooky, the Addams Family. Opening The Coronado Playhouse’s 2018 season is “The Addams Family,” a musical comedy from the writers of “Jersey Boys” directed by Playhouse favorite, Rayme Sciaroni. The musical runs at The Coronado Playhouse through Feb. 25 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $20 to $27.

Around the World in 80 Days
8 p.m., North Coast Repertory Theatre
The North Coast Rep presents “Around the World in 80 Days,” through this Sunday. The play is adapted by Mark Brown from the iconic novel by Jules Verne about a fearless adventurer circling the globe alive with danger, romance, and comic surprises at every turn. The fast-paced production features five actors portraying 42 characters in a race against time. Friday’s performance is at 8 p.m.; tickets start at $49.
Cinema Under the Stars: ‘About Time’
8 p.m., Cinema Under the Stars (Mission Hills)
Enjoy a movie under the stars at this outdoor theater on Goldfinch Street in Mission Hills. The winter/spring screening season features a movie screening every Friday and Saturday night at 8 p.m., now through April 29. This weekend, the romantic 2013 Rachel McAdams flick, “About Time,” hits the big screen. Admission is $18 at the box office, or you can reserve your seat in advance for $20.

Save a Heart, Save a Life 5K
8 a.m., NTC Park at Liberty Station
Hit the pavement for the “Save a Heart Save a Life 5K” at NTC Park at Liberty Station. Proceeds from the race support the Screen Your Teen program and its mission to prevent Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), underwriting free heart screenings and CPR/AED training for youth, schools and youth centers. Registration costs $55 for adults and $35 for runner 18 and younger. Each participant receives a T-shirt, finisher medal, goodie bags, prizes and refreshments at the finish line. 
Lucky Street Vintage Market10 a.m. to 5 p.m., 1722 South Coast Highway #3, OceansideEvery Saturday and Sunday, Lucky Street Productions hosts its “vintage marketplace” in a large warehouse filled with vintage finds in a variety of styles. From shabby chic to oddities and French country to glam, you are sure to find the vintage style of your choice. The market sells clothing items, gardening items, architecture, craft supplies and so much more.
San Diego Miniatures Show
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Saturday and Sunday), Marriott Mission ValleyCrafters, artists and collectors of all things mini will gather this weekend at the Marriott Mission Valley for the 44th Annual Miniatures Show & Sale. The expo takes place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and again Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets cost $8 for adults and $2 for children ages 8 to 12; parking is $8.
Chinese New Year Festival
11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Saturday and Sunday), International Cottages at Balboa ParkThe International Cottages at Balboa Park host this free, two-day Chinese New Year Festival that includes live entertainment, a fashion show and food. Attendees can expect to see performances of the Lion Dance, the Kung-Fu Dragon Dance and other acts inspired by Chinese culture. It’s the year of the dog, so attendees are welcome to bring their pooches to this outdoor fest.
Bonobos!
2 p.m. to 4 p.m., San Diego Museum of Man
The San Diego Museum of Man’s “Living With Animals” program presents two 30-minute presentations Saturday all about bononos, the endangered and peaceful great ape who shares 98.7 percent of its genetic code with humans. The presentation includes details on conservation efforts to save the species. It’s included with paid general admission to the museum, which costs $13 for adults and $10 for children ages 6 to 12. Kids 5 and under get in free.
'Love Hour' & the 'Real Comedians of Social Media'
6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., The Salvation Army Kroc CenterThe Salvation Army Kroc Center on University Avenue serves as the venue for two shows Saturday night: “Love Hour” and the “Real Comedians of Social Media.” The first show (6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.) is based on the podcast, “The Love Hour,” featuring longtime couple Kevin and Melissa Fredericks who will discuss love, relationships and happiness and how to navigate today’s dating world. At 8 p.m. the clean, all-ages comedy show, “Real Comedians of Social Media,” takes the stage, showcasing comics who have made their mark on the internet. Tickets for each show start at $30.
Monster Jam

Monster Jam returns to downtown San Diego’s Petco Park with huge, decked out monster trucks performing thrilling stunts. Saturday’s show includes famed trucks like “Black Pearl” and “Grave Digger” doing their thing on the course. Tickets start at $17; for a close-up look at the Monster Jam trucks and drivers, fans can add a Pit Party Pass for $10, which includes a pre-show party from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Guided Nature Walk
9:30 a.m., Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center
Join a trail guide from Mission Trails Regional Park (MTRP) on this free, 1.5-hour nature walk and learn about the plants, animals, geology, history and ecology of the park. The walk begins at the Visitor Center and will head out to one of three scenic trails: The Oak Grove Loop, The Visitor Center Loop, or The Riverside Grinding Rocks. These walks are typically held at MTRP every Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. Wear close-toed shoes and sunscreen, and bring water.

Tours make an average of five stops at some of the most mouthwatering restaurants in San Diego County. Participants can choose from tours in North Park, Liberty Station, Downtown San Diego, Coronado, La Jolla and Encinitas. Sunday Organ Concert
2 p.m. to 3 p.m., Spreckels Organ Pavilion at Balboa Park
Enjoy a free, hour-long organ concert Sunday at Balboa Park’s famed Spreckels Organ Pavilion. At the keys, the audience will find Raul Prieto Ramirez, the city’s newest San Diego Civic Organist and Artistic Director of the Spreckels Organ Society. Prieto Ramirez hails from Spain and, as he told NBC 7, hopes to keep the program interesting – from Bach to Queen – at the historic Spreckels Organ.
Super Bowl LII
3:30 p.m., Airs on NBC 7The New England Patriots will take on the Philadelphia Eagles at the 52nd Super Bowl Sunday. The big game – live from U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis – airs on NBC 7. The highly-anticipated half-time show will feature pop star Justin Timberlake, and hopefully no “wardrobe malfunctions.”
The Importance of Being Earnest7 p.m., The Old Globe Theatre
The Old Globe Theatre brings Oscar Wilde’s beloved “trivial comedy for serious people” to the stage. In "The Importance of Being Earnest," Jack and Algernon, a pair of bachelors attempting to avoid the realities of their lives, create fictitious personas and end up finding themselves in ridiculously funny situations. Performances run through March 4; ticket prices vary by day.
