Pumpkin Picking in San Diego

Get into the spirit of fall by picking that perfect pumpkin at one of many pumpkin patches up and running in San Diego County. From the north to south, east to west, you’ll find a local patch where you can pick a gorgeous gourd while enjoying autumn activities like hayrides, corn mazes and more. Most local pumpkin patches are open until Halloween.

Halloween Extravaganza
5 p.m. to 10 p.m., The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe
The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe (5951 Linea Del Cielo) hosts its two-day Halloween Extravaganza featuring the free “Inn-sane Asylum” haunted house, a bounce house and food vendors. On Friday, the fun includes the 4th annual Halloween dinner on the lawn, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets to the dinner cost $42 for adults and $22 for children (https://squareup.com/store/the-inn-at-rancho-santa-fe).
Community Art Show
7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Bay City Brewing Co.

Bay City Brewing Co. (3760 Hancock St.) hosts this Community Art Show featuring works from local artists for a night of “crafts and drafts.” The event is free; kids and dogs are welcome.
Ghost Tour in History: Old Town
8 p.m., Old Town San Diego
Take a guided, 90-minute walking “Ghost Tour” in Old Town, exploring all of the history, haunts, and tales that make this landmark unique. The tour includes a visit to the famous Whaley House and the El Campo Santo Cemetery; both sites are said to be home to visitors from beyond. The tour meets at 9 p.m. at Café Coyote on San Diego Avenue; it costs $32.
Group Works to Restore Balboa Park CarouselGroup Works to Restore Balboa Park Carousel
The San Diego-based nonprofit organization, Friends of Balboa Park, recently purchased the historic Balboa Park Carousel located off Park Boulevard. The group plans to restore the ride to its glory days and keep it running for generations to come. The carousel was built in 1910 and boasts all of its original parts. The Scream Zone
7 p.m. to 11 p.m., Del Mar Fairgrounds (Green Parking Lot)
The Scream Zone – the ultimate spooky experience – runs through Halloween in the Green Parking Lot at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Joining spine-tingling attractions like the “House of Horrors” and the “Haunted Hayride” this year is something called “The Running Dead,” where thrill-seekers run through an obstacle course filled with actors posing as hungry, brain-eating zombies. Tickets range from $20 for “The Running Dead” only, to $33 for a package called “The Triple Haunt,” which gets you into three attractions. Latin Thursdays9 p.m., Harrah’s Resort Southern CaliforniaEnjoy live Latin music at Harrah’s Resort Southern California every Thursday night this month at this 21+ fiesta. The shows cost $10 and are available at the door.

Family-Friendly Halloween Activities
Times and Locations Vary
Treat your little ghouls to some safe, family-friendly Halloween activities around San Diego County. From Belmont Park’s “Boomont Park” Fall Festival and Birch Aquarium’s “Sea Monster Mash,” to a ride on the Pumpkin Express in Campo, there are plenty of ways to celebrate the holiday with your little ones. Most Halloween-themed events take place on the weekends, ending Oct. 29.
Home Shows USA
10 a.m. (Friday through Sunday), Del Mar FairgroundsGet some serious home improvement inspiration at the three-day Home Shows USA at O’Brien Hall at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Get everything for your home under one roof, including products and services, from remodeling and décor to landscaping and more. Entry to the expo is free; parking is $13. The show runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

You & Yours Distilling Co. Tour5 p.m. & 8 p.m., You & Yours Distilling Co.You & Yours Distilling Co. – a small, chic distillery in San Diego’s East Village (1495 G St.) – recently launched tours of its tasting room, available at certain times Wednesday through Sunday. The 45-minute tours are led by a member of the distillery’s team who leads visitors to the production floor, explaining every step of the distilling process – down to the bottling of each product. The tour is followed by a question and answer session and, of course, a flight of the distillery's flagship gin and vodka. Tours cost $25 per person; you also get $10 off a bottle of vodka or gin. Trick-or-Treat India Street
5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Little Italy
Little Italy businesses will open their doors to little monsters in costume for a fun night of safe trick-or-treating in the cool urban neighborhood. Piazza Basilone (on the corner of India and W. Fir streets) will have a list of businesses participating in the event, plus trick-or-treating maps.
The Haunted Hotel
6 p.m. to 1 a.m., Market Street in Gaslamp Quarter
Halloween haunts of epic proportions lurk in every corner at The Haunted Hotel located at 424 Market St., near Fourth Avenue, in downtown San Diego. For the past 25 years, this spooky fall attraction has invited brave patrons to make their way through a creepy hotel while trying to flee from all kinds of monsters and ghouls. The Haunted Hotel runs most nights now through Oct. 31; general admission tickets cost $19.
Celtic Choral Celebration
7 p.m., California Center for the Arts EscondidoThe Center Chorale performs its first concert of the 2017-2018 season Friday night at the Center Theater at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido. The show will focus on the tunes of Scotland and Ireland, couple with bagpipes and Highland dancing. The 50-voice ensemble will be accompanied by pianist Dr. Joseph Valent and conductor Dr. Joe Stanford, a professor emeritus from Palomar College. Tickets cost $20.
Boo Ball 2017
7 p.m., House of Blues
Rock 105.3FM hosts Boo Ball 2017 at House of Blues, a night of live music, dancing, DJs, a “silent rage room,” go-go dancers, and more. The event includes a costume contest where the best get-up will win $500 and a pair of tickets to see Guns ‘N’ Roses on Nov. 28 at Valley View Casino Center. Tickets to the 21+ Boo Ball cost $25.

The Haunted Trail7 p.m. to 11 p.m., Balboa ParkAs Halloween nears, The Haunted Trail at Balboa Park is a sure-fire way to have a frightening fall. Open now through Oct. 31, this mile-long trail is a stroll through the park you’ll never forget. Those who dare enter through a twisted grove of pines and gnarled oaks. After that, all bets are off as scary surprises lurk around every corner. The Haunted Trail also hosts an additional maze dubbed "The eXperiment," described as “3,500-square-feet of freak-infested terror.” Tickets cost $25 per person, including entry into "The eXperiment."

The San Diego Symphony presents a performance of Wynton Marsalis’ critically-acclaimed violin concerto featuring violinist Nicola Benedetti and conductor Cristian Macelaru. The show features bluegrass and jazz elements, plus passionate pieces “centered on feminine mystique.” Tickets (balcony) start at $25.
Halloween Pacific Beach Pub Crawl
9 p.m. to 2 a.m. (check-in from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.), Bub’s at the BeachWear your Halloween costume and enjoy drink specials all night long at 10 bars and nightclubs in Pacific Beach at this Halloween Pub Crawl. There’s no set schedule, but you do need to check in between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. at Bub’s at the Beach (1030 Garnet Ave.) to claim your wristband and drink coupons. The $25 wristband also includes free entry into those 10 participating pubs.
Saturday, Oct. 28
The Boulevard Boo Parade
10 a.m. El Cajon and Rolando boulevards
Billed as San Diego’s only Halloween parade, the 13th annual Boulevard Boo Parade returns to El Cajon Boulevard with ghoulish floats, vintage cars, costumes, bands and spooky surprises. The free parade starts at the intersection of El Cajon and Rolando boulevards then travels west to 60th Street. Visitors can view the procession from the south side of El Cajon Boulevard. After the parade, the College Avenue Baptist Church (4747 College Ave.) will host the free AfterBOO! Carnival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring rides, games, inflatable play structures, arts and crafts vendors, food vendors and live music.
Halloween Family Day
11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Balboa Park
This 9th annual free event at Balboa Park invites families to celebrate Halloween in a safe and fun way as more than two dozen museums offer free admission to kids 12 and under, with a paying adult. Throughout the day, participating museums will host free craft projects for kids, costume parades and contests, gallery tours and other spooky surprises, such as a 2:30 p.m. rooftop pumpkin drop at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. Kids 12 and under who wear their costumes to Family Day can ride the famous Balboa Park Carousel for free. Food trucks and free activity booths will line the Prado and Plaza de Panama. There will also be costume contests and even a "Thriller" flash mob.
Dia De Los Muertos in Old Town
11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., Old Town San Diego State Historic ParkEvery year around this time, Old Town San Diego State Historic Park celebrates Mexican culture and those who have passed away with a giant Dia De Los Muertos party. This year, the free celebration is on Saturday and Sunday, with entertainment and activities all day, plus food, drinks and other goodies for sale. Shops and museums around the park will set up altars meant to honor the dead. On Nov. 2 – the official Day of the Dead – the park will host its traditional evening procession at 6 p.m., where attendees walk from altar to altar, leaving gifts and prayers for loved ones who have entered the spiritual realm. The procession ends at the historic El Campo Santo cemetery around 8 p.m.
San Diego Mac N’ Cheese Festival
11 a.m., Waterfront ParkMac n’ cheese is arguably one of the best comfort foods known to man, so of course, there’s an entire festival dedicated to the dish. The third annual San Diego Mac n’ Cheese Festival will fill downtown’s Waterfront Park with ooey, gooey goodness on Saturday. A $35 general admission ticket gets each attendee plenty of mac n’ cheese samples, plus 10 beer tastings. Save room for the Gourmet Mac n’ Cheese competition, too – a head-to-head showdown between several local restaurants all vying for mac n’ cheese supremacy. Winners in two categories – Best Mac n’ Cheese in San Diego and People’s Choice Mac n’ Cheese – will be selected by a panel of expert judges and attendees, respectively.
IB’s Chills and Thrills
12 p.m., Portwood Pier PlazaCelebrate Halloween in Imperial Beach this Saturday for a day of free fun for the whole family. Trick-or-treat with vendors and compete in costume contests. As you search for candy, enjoy great music and try delicious food from vendors. All vendors can be found in the center of Pier Plaza Imperial Beach. 
Rancho BEERnardo Festival
2 p.m., Webb Park (Bernardo Center Drive)
If you’re looking for something other than Halloween festivities this weekend, this one is for you! Rancho BEERnardo features more than 50 IPA craft beers, spirits and regional wines to taste and try throughout the afternoon. Listen to live music as you drink and play games and other activities. Gourmet food will also be available for purchase. The sixth annual festival is sponsored by the Rancho Bernardo Sunrise Rotary Club and Urge Gastropub.
Ratatouille in Concert
4 p.m., Joan and Irwin Jacobs Music CenterThe beloved Disney and Pixar film “Ratatouille” will play in high definition on the big screen as the stunning score, composed by Michael Giacchino, will be performed live by the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. Tickets start at $20.  
Monster Bash
6 p.m. to Midnight, Gaslamp QuarterThe 17th annual Monster Bash takes over downtown San Diego, transforming the Gaslamp Quarter into a Halloween underworld for about 15,000 costumed attendees. The 21+ block party includes themed stages and drink specials, plus no cover, at 25 restaurants and bars in the Gaslamp. There’s also a high-stakes costume contest with $5,000 in cash prizes. General admission costs $50; VIP passes cost $85.
Mission Brewery Beer Dinner
6 p.m., SEA180 Coastal Tavern
Talk about brews with a view. Mission Brewery joins SEA180 Coastal Tavern for this beer dinner, which includes four courses expertly paired with Mission Brewery suds. Highlights include an Herb Roasted Rack of Lamb paired with a Plunder IPA. Tickets to the dinner cost $59.95 per person; call (619) 631-4949 for reservations.
Halloween Movie Night: Hotel Transylvania
6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Flower Hill Promenade
After the sun goes down, the Flower Hill Promenade will host its Halloween Movie Night featuring a free outdoor screening of “Hotel Transylvania.” The screening goes down in the east courtyard; grab an inflated seat or bring a blanket and chair. You can also buy food from one of the nearby eateries and picnic while you watch the movie.
Hallo-Wine and Spirits Party
7 p.m., Hotel Del Coronado
Celebrate Halloween in style at the Hotel Del Coronado this fall at a decked-out costume party. The wine and spirits party features great food, delicious winesand dancing. This year’s theme is American Horror Hotel. Attendees must be 21 or older. Tickets cost $150.
Sunday, Oct. 29
First Look: Breeder’s Cup Breakfast7:30 a.m., Del Mar Fairgrounds
One of the most prestigious events in Thoroughbred racing comes to the Del Mar Racetrack this fall, and the countdown begins at a special breakfast this Sunday. At this free event, you can watch the horses’ morning workouts as they prepare for the weekend races. As you watch, you can purchase breakfast. To attend, enter through Solana Gate off Via De La Valle and head to the Exhibit Hall.
Halloween at the Station
12 p.m. to 4 p.m., North Promenade at Liberty StationThis free, 3rd annual Halloween bash invites families to the Arts District at Liberty Station for a day of costumes, trick-or-treating and music. Check out free comics, arts and crafts, a play area, live entertainment and more. Attendees are encouraged to wear costumes, and participating businesses will host a trick-or-treat event. The event, in partnership with San Diego Comic Art Gallery and Comickaze Comics Books and More, runs from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
California Ballet’s Swan Lake
1 p.m. or 5:30 p.m., San Diego Civic TheatreThe classic and beloved ballet “Swan Lake” – set to stunning Tchaikovsky music -- returns to San Diego, thanks to the California Ballet Company. The story follows a prince who falls in love with a Swan Queen, caught in an evil spell. Tickets start at $25.
The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey8 p.m., Old Globe TheatreThis solo show, written and performed by James Lecensne, starts previews tonight at The Old Globe Theatre. The play follows a New Jersey detective eager for a case to get him from behind his desk, and the case that finally does it: the disappearance of teen Leonard Pelkey. Tickets start at $30. The show's final run is on Sunday.
