Things to Do This Weekend in San Diego: April 5-8


SeaWorld Seven Seas Food Festival  During Park Hours, SeaWorld San DiegoSample bites from around the world at SeaWorld’s annual food fest. Each Seven Seas food location will feature tantalizing tastes of traditional street foods, like pork belly pizza, spicy tuna and escargot, Plus, each location will have one daring bite featuring exotic ingredients. Pair your treats with a craft beer or wine. Sampler tickets range from $20 to $65 for the festival running on select days through April 15.Beautiful Blooms: The Flower Field

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Carlsbad RanchThe beautiful blooms at the famous Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are back in their brilliant glory. The annual flower viewing season runs through May 13. As usual, for about six to eight weeks, visitors can enjoy displays of colorful Giant Tecolote Ranunculus spanning fifty acres. The annual burst of blooms is something locals look forward to year after year as spring rolls in. The Flower Fields are open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; tickets cost $16 for adults, $14 for seniors, and $8 for children ages 3 to 10. If you plan on visiting a few times this spring, you may want to spring for a season pass. Keep an eye on the Flower Fields website, too, as the venue hosts lots of family-friendly, fun events throughout its season, usually on the weekends.
MythBusters: The Explosive Exhibition 
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Monday through Thursday) and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Friday through Sunday), Fleet Science CenterCan you pull a tablecloth off a table without disturbing the dishes on top? Do you stay drier running or walking in the rain? Get the answer to some of your burning questions at the new exhibit based on the popular TV show, "Mythbusters." Just like the show, this hands-on exhibit will allow guests to use the scientific method to test some commonly-held theories. Colorado Rockies v. San Diego Padres12:40 p.m., Petco ParkBaseball season is in full swing. Root, root, root for the San Diego Padres as they take the field at Petco Park for their second series of the season -- this time, against the Colorado Rockies. Tickets start at $15. The afternoon start time makes for a sunny, San Diego day at the ballpark that can be only enhanced with sips of craft brew and some of this year’s new local grub -- like Seafood Tacos from Blue Water Seafood Market & Grill or a Smoked Bacon-Wrapped Hot Dog from Carnitas' Snack Shack.
American MariachiDates and Times Vary (Until April 29), The Old Globe"American Mariachi," a new play created by writer Jose Cruz Gonzalez, tells the story of a teenage girl in the 1970s who yearns to break into the male-dominated art of mariachi. She creates an all-girl mariachi band despite disapproval from her family. The play features San Diego talent, like director James Vásquez and lead actor Jennifer Paredes. Tickets start at $30 for the play that runs through April 29 at the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage.

Cruisin’ Grand5 to 9 p.m., Grand Avenue (Escondido)It’s opening night for the free auto festival that has taken over downtown Escondido for nearly two decades. Hundreds of vintage cars line Grand Avenue for seven blocks every Friday night from April to September for the event that seems to transform the city into a retro paradise. Along the route, enjoy dinner or browse local goods at one of the many restaurants and shops that extend their hours during the car show.
First Friday Art Walk6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Downtown OceansideThe Oceanside Art Walk was created to give local artists a chance to showcase their artwork and talents to other San Diegans every Friday night. The artists take over shops and perform in open areas throughout downtown, bringing a lively energy to the city. This free event is put on by the nonprofit, Oceanside Friends of the Arts.Inside Liberty Public
Hops on the Harbor7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Flagship Cruises & EventsThis month, Vista beer-maker Iron Fist Brewing joins Hops on the Harbor to give guests a selection of samples -- from IPAs to limited releases like their Chocolate Mint Stout -- as they enjoy a sail around the San Diego Bay. Four 6-oz samples will be paired with dinner courses. This month’s menu includes a pan-seared Sea Bass with lemon beurre blanc, a chicken penne pasta with sundried tomatoes in a cream sauce, an herb-roasted leg of lamb and an oatmeal stout-braised beef short rib. Each item is paired with a 6-ounce sample of the family-owned brewery’s craft beer. The dinner cruise boards at 7 p.m. from 990 North Harbor Dr. and sails past the San Diego skyline, USS Midway, Star of India and other Maritime Museum ships and the Coronado Bay Bridge. Tickets cost $69.50 for adults and $41.70 for children ages 4 to 12; kids 3 and under are free. Reservations are recommended.
Septime Webre’s 'The Great Gatsby'7:30 p.m., San Diego Civic TheatreThe Roaring Twenties are brought to life in this musical rendition of the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald tale about a millionaire whose desire is his ultimate demise. The story is set to swinging choreography that fuses ballet, jazz and tap performed by the California Ballet Company. Musician Billy Novik composed original works to complement the story. Before the show, partake in a red carpet photo shoot or a 30-minute discussion with ballet director Maxine Mahon. Elgar Cello Concerto8 p.m. (Friday and Saturday), Copley Symphony HallThe final work of English composer Edward Elgar was a composition perfectly created for the booming sounds of the cello. With the purchase of a ticket ($20 and up), guests will be treated to the Cello Concerto at the hands of Conductor Case Scaglione, cellist Andrei Ionita and the San Diego Symphony. The ensemble will also perform a special version of this concert Sunday at The Village Church in Rancho Santa Fe -- the full symphony’s first time in Rancho Santa Fe. Tickets to that event cost $50. 
Cinema Under the Stars: 'Get Out'8 p.m., Cinema Under the Stars (Mission Hills)Enjoy a movie under the stars at this outdoor theater on Goldfinch Street in Mission Hills. The winter/spring season features a movie screening every Friday and Saturday night at 8 p.m., now through April 29. This weekend, the Oscar-winning thriller 'Get Out' will keep viewers in suspense. The film, written and directed by Jordan Peele, tells the story of a black man (Daniel Kaluuya) who stumbles upon a disturbing secret when he is taken home to meet his girlfriend’s (Allison Williams) parents. Little Italy Mercato8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Little ItalyEvery Saturday, more than 200 tents line the streets of Little Italy, spanning five blocks and showcasing an array of farm fresh produce, meats, flowers and artisan craft goods from local vendors. Grab a crepe as you stroll, or sit in the Piazza Famiglia while enjoying music from local artists. This has been a neighborhood tradition for years and has become one of the biggest farmers markets in San Diego. 
San Diego Botanic Garden ArtFest9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Saturday and Sunday), San Diego Botanic GardenThe sprawling botanical garden in Encinitas (230 Quail Gardens Drive) gives this art show, featuring more than 20 local artists, a unique backdrop. Art admirers and shoppers can browse a variety of pieces -- from sculptures to paintings and potting -- set against a backdrop of dragon trees, rare fruit gardens, bamboo groves and ponds that call the botanical garden home. While you shop, Bob Ballentine and friends will tantalize your earbuds with live music. Admission to the garden is $14 for adults and $8 for children.
South Bay Earth Day11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Chula Vista Marina at Bayside ParkCelebrate the planet at one of the largest Earth Day events in the region. This free festival in the South Bay aims to show guests how to reduce their impact on the environment and live greener with a variety of fun activities throughout the day, like a fix-it clinic and cycling events. Growers will be selling organic fruits and vegetables at the farmers market and some of the county’s most popular food trucks will have savory delights on hand. There will be plenty of freebies at the Earth Day celebration, including yoga classes, an oil change and free recycling kits.
San Diego Gulls v. Ontario Reign7 p.m., Valley View Casino CenterGulliver the Gull is calling on you to cheer on San Diego’s Gulls as they take on the Ontario Reign in San Diego in one of the last games of the 2017-18 season. These high-energy games are fun for the whole family or a group of friends, even if hockey isn’t really your thing. Tickets start at $22. The Gulls want to celebrate their supporters as they round out the season with a "Fan Appreciation Night." La Jolla Concours D’Elegance9 a.m. to 4 p.m., La JollaThe annual luxury car extravaganza is rolling back into La Jolla. The Concours D’Elegance gives car enthusiasts a chance to gaze at luxurious, vintage cars from big brands like Rolls Royce, Cadillac, Bugatti and more as they sit atop the lawn at Ellen Browning Scripps Park. With a general admission ticket for $65 ($70 day of), you can sip on craft cocktails and grove to swinging 30s-era music as you admire the automobiles. A VIP ticket for $175 gets all that, plus bites from 15 of San Diego's finest restaurants -- like Eddie V’s, Piatti and Aroi Cafe -- and access to a VIP lounge. Separate ticketed events include a Soiree on Friday and an Aston Martin Art Deco Party on Saturday. 
Guided Nature Walk
9:30 a.m., Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center
Join a trail guide from Mission Trails Regional Park (MTRP) on this free, 1.5-hour nature walk and learn about the plants, animals, geology, history and ecology of the park. The walk begins at the Visitor Center and will head out to one of three scenic trails: The Oak Grove Loop, The Visitor Center Loop, or The Riverside Grinding Rocks. These walks are typically held at MTRP every Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. Wear close-toed shoes and sunscreen, and bring water.

Sip ‘n Savor Fest12 to 4 p.m., Hard Rock HotelLocal restaurants, breweries and bands are coming together to raise funds for the American Liver Association, all while giving guests a chance to sample mouthwatering cuisine and sips of craft beverages. With a $45 ticket to the Sip ‘n Savor Festival, guests can sample 10 creations by local chefs, including Chef Ashley Kato of JSix and Chef Andy Weiss of The Smoking Gun, while taking in sprawling views of downtown San Diego from the rooftop of the Hard Rock Hotel. Music will fill the open-air patio as local bands like Fishing for Chips and Half Car Garage perform.
Live Music Sundays: Bill Magee Blues1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Liberty Public MarketBill Magee has played the blues with Jimi Hendrix and with his band the Kansas City Playboys. Now, after a brief retirement, he is returning to bring bluesy rhythms to the Liberty Public Market patio for a free performance. Before or after the concert, stroll the artisan shops or grab a tasty bite at the stores and restaurants that make up Liberty Public Market.

Sunday Organ Concert2 p.m. to 3 p.m., Spreckels Organ Pavilion at Balboa ParkEnjoy a free, hour-long organ concert Sunday at Balboa Park’s famed Spreckels Organ Pavilion. At the keys, the audience will find Raul Prieto Ramirez, the city’s newest San Diego Civic Organist and Artistic Director of the Spreckels Organ Society. Prieto Ramirez hails from Spain and, as he told NBC 7, hopes to keep the program interesting – from Bach to Queen – at the historic Spreckels Organ.

Looking to save some cash, but still enjoy the city? In San Diego, there are still plenty of activities to enjoy for free or on the cheap.
