El Universal: 100 Years in the Life of Mexico & the WorldOpen 24 Hours, Arts District at Liberty Station
The photographic exhibition, “El Universal: 100 Years in the Life of Mexico & the World,” is on display at the Arts District at Liberty Station through Sept. 28. Through large photographs and reprints of front page stories, the exhibit celebrates the centennial of the founding of “El Universal,” the nationally-circulated newspaper of Mexico. Part of this exhibit is currently on display in Tijuana City Hall’s Grand Central Patio; the other part, which includes 50 panels, is being displayed at Liberty Station, including the first edition of the newspaper, published on Oct. 1, 1916. The exhibit is free and open to the public 24 hours a day
Liberty Public Farmers Market
2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Near Liberty Public Market at Liberty Station
Liberty Station’s brand-new weekly farmers market goes down every Thursday near Liberty Public Market, off Perry Road. The farmers market features more than 60 vendors, from local produce growers and specialty food purveyors, to artisan gift merchants. While you peruse vendors, enjoy live performances from local musicians.
Taste of Del Mar
5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Village of Del Mar
Foodies, this one’s for you. The Taste of Del Mar – a walking food tour – showcases more than 25 culinary creations from restaurants located throughout the Village of Del Mar. As you stroll from sample to sample, you can enjoy live music. The event also features more than 15 “Sip Stops” pouring craft beer and wine for the 21+ crowd. Tickets are $30 for food only, or $40 if you want to add the sips.
Bay City Brewing Paint Party
6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Bay City Brewing
Bay City Brewing (3760 Hancock St.) hosts this artsy-meets-sudsy painting event Thursday night. Patrons are invited to snag a seat, grab a brush and paint something pretty while enjoying craft brews. Tickets are $38.
Group Works to Restore Balboa Park CarouselGroup Works to Restore Balboa Park Carousel
The San Diego-based nonprofit organization, Friends of Balboa Park, recently purchased the historic Balboa Park Carousel located off Park Boulevard. The group plans to restore the ride to its glory days and keep it running for generations to come. The carousel was built in 1910 and boasts all of its original parts. An American in Paris

Out on its first national tour, this new Tony Award-winning musical about an American soldier, a mysterious French girl and an indomitable European city – all yearning for new beginnings after war – runs through Sunday at the San Diego Civic Theatre. The musical is directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon with songs from George and Ira Gershwin. Tickets start at $56.50.
Kountry Wayne

Comic Wayne Colley – known as “Kountry Wayne” – shot to fame after posting videos on Facebook. As his act went viral, he amassed millions of followers and fans across social media. Hailing from Millen, Georgia, the comic describes himself as a reserved vegan and father of eight who wants the best for his kids. He performs this weekend – Thursday through Saturday –at The American Comedy Co. in downtown San Diego. Tickets cost $22.

You & Yours Distilling Co. Tour3 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., You & Yours Distilling Co.You & Yours Distilling Co. – a small, chic distillery in San Diego’s East Village (1495 G St.) – recently launched tours of its tasting room, available at certain times Wednesday through Sunday, including 3 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. sessions on Fridays. The 45-minute tours are led by a member of the distillery’s team who leads visitors to the production floor, explaining every step of the distilling process – down to the bottling of each product. The tour is followed by a question and answer session and, of course, a spirits tasting flight of the distilleries flagship gin and vodka. Balboa Park’s “Food Truck Friday” is a summertime event that brings more than a dozen food trucks to the Plaza de Panama and El Prado walkway every Friday evening through Sept. 29. As you grab some food, you’ll also be able to enjoy live entertainment at the park. Stick around and check out “Balboa Park After Dark” (see below), happening simultaneously at the park Friday nights this summer.
Sorrento Valley Beer Festival

Enjoy craft beer, live music, food and games at the Sorrento Valley Beer Festival Friday night at Party Pals (10427 Roselle St.). Attendees will enjoy up to 12 mini beer tastings; food is available for purchase. Tickets are $35 at the door and $10 for designated drivers.
Cruisin’ Grand Escondido5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Downtown Escondido (235 East Grand Ave.)Downtown Escondido’s free, weekly vintage car show continues, running every Friday night through Sept. 29. Cruisin’ Grand Escondido takes over historical Grand Avenue, with more than 500 cool cars lining the streets. The event, now in its 18th year, draws thousands of attendees. Each Friday night, awards are given to the most impressive pre-1973 American-made cars. Musical entertainment includes performances across four stages: Broadway; Juniper Street; Maple Street Plaza; Kalmia & Grand. This Friday’s edition will focus on Fire Trucks.

Balboa Park’s sundown summertime program continues, with eight museums offering extended late-night hours every Friday through Sept. 29. Some museums are even offering $5 admission deals. Food vendors and live entertainment will also fill the landmark during this “Balboa Park After Dark” series.

Summer Movies in the Park
5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Multiple LocationsSan Diego’s fun and free “Summer Movies in the Park” presents family-friendly movies Friday night at several locations across the county, usually at 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. This week, the lineup includes “Beauty and the Beast” – the live action 2017 version – screening at Larsen Field, and “The Lego Batman Movie” at El Toyon Park. Meanwhile, Disney’s “Moana” will screen at two locations: Standley Community Park and Fallbrook Community Center. The outdoor movies are free to attend. Bring a blanket and a picnic and you’re all set for a nice evening out with the family. 
Musica en La Plaza
7 p.m., California Center for the Arts EscondidoThe California Center for the Arts in Escondido keeps the music going with “Musica en La Plaza,” a series of free concerts at the venue’s Lyric Court on Friday nights. The weekly concerts highlight everything from cumbia and huapango to salsa and Norteña music, with rhythms that’ll get you up and dancing under the stars in no time. This week, the 5-member Potro Norteño takes the stage, playing Norteño music that will have you dancing in no time. The food truck Dos Bandidos will be on site selling snacks.
Beatles vs. Stones
9 p.m., Harrah’s Resort Southern California
This tribute show will pit two of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll bands in history against one another – The Beatles vs. The Stones – for one electrifying night of music. The 21+ show is at Dive at Harrah’s Resort SoCal; it starts at 9 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 9
Yoga for Hope
7 a.m., Liberty Station
Wake up early this Saturday to exercise and raise money for a good cause: research. The event raises awareness about the benefits of yoga and sends money to City of Hope for research on life-threatening illnesses. Yoga for Hope San Diego has helped raise more than $400,000 to help doctors continue lifesaving work.
Snorkel with the Leopard Sharks
8 a.m., Scripps Institution of Oceanography
It’s a unique experience you don’t want to miss. Join aquarium naturalists as they head out off of the La Jolla coast to snorkel with leopard sharks in their natural habitat. In order to participate, you must have intermediate knowledge of swimming and have previous snorkeling experience. Participants must be 10 years or older and must supply their own gear. Tickets start at $25.
Poway Community Day Festival10:30 a.m., Poway Community Park (13094 Civic Center Drive in Poway)Kick off Poway Days with a good, old fashioned parade! Watch the marchers and floats go down the streets of Poway. Then, once the parade ends, stop by the festival at the park and try out tasty food, let your kids play in a special kids zone (featuring carnival rides, inflatables, pony rides and more. Try your hand at crafts, and more. The whole day will have live entertainment.
San Diego Blues Festival
12 p.m., Embarcadero Marina Park North
Stop by the San Diego waterfront this weekend to catch this family-friendly blues festival, featuring nine musical acts on two stages. This year, the California Honeydrops, Joe Louis Walker and Grammy Award-winning artist Mavis Staples will be some of the live acts on stage. Those looking for refreshments can try out some local craft beer and food vendors. Plus, there will be arts and craft vendors on site. All proceeds and food drive donations will benefit the San Diego Food Bank. Tickets start at $25.
Carlsbad Brewfest
12 p.m., Holiday Park on Pio Pico
Spend this lovely August Saturday tasting some of San Diego County’s most beloved craft beers at this festival. The four annual incarnation will start at noon and feature more than 30 local breweries offering more than 60 beers. Tastings will go until 4:30 p.m. In addition to beer, there will be music, entertainment, games, food vendors and more. Tickets start at $10; attendees must be 21 years or older. Designated driver tickets are available as well.
South Bay Pride Art and Music Festival
12 p.m., Bayside Park in Chula Vista
Celebrate South Bay’s LGBTQ pride this Saturday at this festival. Fill your afternoon with music, dancing, great food and friends. Plus, the festival will feature vendors and exhibitors. The event is free.
Burgers and Beer
1 p.m., Golden Hill Park
Burgers AND beer? Sign us up! At this second annual event, the search for San Diego’s best burger continues. More than 30 restaurants will compete to win the title “Best Burger.” A ticket will also get you unlimited beer samples from more than 20 local breweries. Attendees will get tokens to go around and vote for their favorite burger. Tickets start at $45 and the event will go on, rain or shine. The event is for those 21 years or older.
Pizza and Beer Festival
2 p.m., Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier
It’s all about San Diego’s best slice of pizza in Downtown San Diego this Saturday as the Pizza & Beer festival kicks off. Try unlimited amounts of pizza and beer from dozens of local and regional restaurants and breweries at this event as you take in the beautiful Bay view. Tickets cost $65; the event is for those 21 years or older.
The Addams Family
2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Lyceum TheatreThey’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky. STAR Repertory Theatre’s production of “The Addams Family: A New Musical Comedy” debuts at downtown’s Lyceum Theatre, where it runs from Sept. 9 until Sept. 17. Two years ago, the full run of this musical sold out in the Lyceum’s smaller Space Theatre. This time, it’s taking over the larger Lyceum Stage. Opening day performances are at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; tickets are $29.
Wild Goose Dreams
2 p.m., La Jolla Playhouse
Human connection and love are at the root of an innovative new La Jolla Playhouse piece starring actor James Kyson. Kyson, best known for his work in NBC's "Heroes" and "Hawaii Five-O," stars in "Wild Goose Dreams," a new play written by Hansol Jung and directed by Tony nominee Leigh Silverman. The play follows the journey of South Korean "goose father" Minsung (James Kyosn) as he supports his wife and daughter overseas. "Wild Goose Dreams" is a co-production with The Public Theater in New York City. Tickets start at $35.

“To be or not to be, that is the question.” It’s arguably Shakespeare’s most recognizable line, in one of most well-known plays. The Old Globe, in Balboa Park, closes out their summer season with this classic, directed by Barry Edelstein. It’s a revenge thriller, political drama, family saga and more. Don’t miss one of the greatest plays ever written, staged for the first time in years in San Diego. The play runs at the Globe through this Sunday.

9/11 Heroes Run

Come out and run in honor of the lives lost on 9/11. The annual event unites the community and remembers our veterans, military and first responders who serve the community. The 5K series was inspired by Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion, killed by a sniper in Iraq on April 2007 while protecting his battalion. Before his final deployment, he visited Rescue One in NYC and gained a renewed perspective on the fight in Iraq

Ken Ludwig’s "Robin Hood" 7 p.m., The Old GlobeSee the timeless story of hero Robin Hood in a new light: on stage, in this brand-new, Globe-commissioned play by Ken Ledwig. Ludwig, a playwright whose works have appeared on Broadway and London's West End ("Crazy For You," "Lend Me a Tenor," "An American in Paris," and more), comes back to The Globe in this world premiere comedy. Ludwig most recently premiered "Baskerville" at the Globe, bringing Sherlock Holmes to San Diego. The piece promises thrills, romance, laughter and more. The play's run wraps up on Sunday.

The Old Globe's 2017 - 2018 season kicks off with "Benny & Joon," a delightful new world-premiere musical based on the beloved 1993 offbeat romantic comedy. The musical, with a book by Kirsten Guenther ("Breaking Through"), music by Nolan Gasser and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein ("Little Women"), follows auto mechanic Benny(his sister's sole caretaker) and his eclectic sister Joon. The music runs through Oct. 22.
