Things to Do This Weekend in San Diego: Oct. 5-8


Fall into the spirit of autumn with some Oktoberfest celebrations and spine-tingling, Halloween-inspired attractions. If that’s not your cup of tea, don’t fret. There are art shows, concerts, and cool community events aplenty, too. Get up. Get out. Play!
Thursday, Oct. 5
Fossil Mysteries
10 a.m. to 5 p.m., San Diego Natural History Museum
On display at the San Diego Natural History Museum (theNAT) in Balboa Park is “Fossil Mysteries,” a permanent exhibition that explores the rich fossil history in Southern California and Baja California, Mexico. From dinosaurs to mastodons, this interactive exhibition looks at fossils spanning 75 million years and the related evolution, extinction, and ecology. “Fossil Mysteries” is included with admission into theNat: $19 for adults and $12 for children ages 3 to 17.
CRAFToberfest
11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Liberty Public Market
Liberty Public Market (LPM) continues its 10-day craft beer-meets-Oktoberfest celebration featuring tasty brews and German-inspired bites available for purchase across the artisan vendors of the marketplace. Over at Bottlecraft, the German Tap Takeover includes several “biers,” plus a $15 collector’s stein with $5 CRAFToberfest beer refills all week long. For food, Mastiff Sausage Company will grill brats on the LPM patio, while Crafted Baked Goods whips up flavored pretzel bites, and Le Parfait Paris bakes apple strudel. The event, which runs through Oct. 9, is free; bring money to buy food and drinks.
Kids Cooking Class: Pho!
3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Lazy Acres in Encinitas
Treat your little one to this cooking class in the Moonlight Room at Lazy Acres (150 Encinitas Blvd.) led by Chef Isabelle, who will be teaching mini chefs and older how to make pho and other Vietnamese dishes. With an emphasis on fresh veggies and herbs, the chef will start by rolling spring rolls, accompanied with fresh mint and peanut sauce, then move onto chopping and dicing goodies for pho. For dessert, the class ends with coconut cupcakes with butternut squash puree. The class is designed for kids age 6 and older and costs $20 per child. Space is limited, so sign your foodie up ahead of time.
Studio Series: Shelley Reed
6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Lux Art Institute in Encinitas
Artist Shelley Reed – known for her work inspired by extensive research in art history and influence from paintings of the past – opens the 11th “Artist-in-Residency” season at the Lux Art Institute (1550 S. El Camino Real) in Encinitas. Reed’s black and white work aims to show how art history shapes our contemporary understanding of art. At this 18+ event, visitors can look at Reed’s work on display in the Artist Pavilion, followed by a discussion about her work, led by Reed. Tickets are $10.
Babcock Wine Dinner
6 p.m., 1500 Ocean at Hotel Del Coronado
Love wine and fancy food? Well, in your book, this dinner at The Del might be worth the splurge. Part of the 1500 Ocean restaurant’s Winemaker Dinner Series, Thursday night’s event will showcase the limited release sips of Babcock Winery, paired with a seasonal, multicourse meal and ocean views. Arrive early for a 6 p.m. reception, with dinner beginning a half-hour later. This event costs $135 per person.
The Scream Zone
7 p.m. to 11 p.m., Del Mar Fairgrounds (Green Parking Lot)
It’s baaaack. The Scream Zone – the ultimate spooky experience – is running now through Halloween in the Green Parking Lot at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Joining spine-tingling attractions like the “House of Horrors” and the “Haunted Hayride” this year is something called “The Running Dead,” where thrill-seekers run through an obstacle course filled with actors posing as hungry, brain-eating zombies. The Scream Zone dates: Oct. 5-8; Oct. 11-15; Oct. 18-22; Oct. 24-31. Tickets range from $20 for “The Running Dead” only, to $33 for a package called “The Triple Haunt,” which gets you into three attractions. Good luck out there.

The Haunted Trail
7 p.m. to 11 p.m., Balboa Park
As Halloween nears, The Haunted Trail at Balboa Park is a sure-fire way to have a frightening fall. Open now through Oct. 31, this mile-long trail is a stroll through the park you’ll never forget. Those who dare enter through a twisted grove of pines and gnarled oaks. After that, all bets are off as scary surprises lurk around every corner. The Haunted Trail also hosts an additional maze dubbed "The eXperiment," described as “3,500-square-feet of freak-infested terror.” Tickets cost $25 per person, including entry into "The eXperiment."

7:30 p.m., Humphreys Concerts by the Bay
The group that broke ground for the country music format with hits like “Here Comes the Rain” and “Crying Shame” brings their high-energy show to the stage at Humphreys by the Bay, with special guest, Slings & Arrows. Tickets cost $45. 
Latin Thursdays9 p.m., Harrah’s Resort Southern CaliforniaEnjoy live Latin music at Harrah’s Resort Southern California every Thursday night this month at this 21+ fiesta. The shows cost $10 and are available at the door.
Friday, Oct. 6
OB Oktoberfest
1 p.m. to 11 p.m. (Friday and Saturday), Ocean BeachThe self-proclaimed "wildest" Oktoberfest celebration in San Diego returns to Ocean Beach on Oct. 6 and Oct. 7. With a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean, the event includes live music, beer and quirky contests such as Bratwurst Eating, Stein Holding, The Sausage Toss, Ms. Oktoberfest and Mr. OktoberStretch. As usual, dozens of local vendors will line the grassy area at the foot of Newport Avenue and Abbott Street, too, selling their goodies to revelers. Organizers say the beer garden will be located in the adjacent Ocean Beach Pier parking lot, which will include the main stage for bands. Entry to the 21+ beer garden costs $5. 
San Diego Central Library Architecture Tour
2 p.m. to 3 p.m., San Diego Central LibraryFrom its dome and lobby to the Helen Price Reading Room, courtyard and sculpture garden, take a free tour of the San Diego Central Library and learn about the architecture and materials used in the design of the civic building. The tour meets in the Garden Courtyard in front of the auditorium at 2 p.m.; you must register ahead of time to attend this free event.

Oktoberfest in El Cajon

Oktoberfest in El Cajon returns for its second weekend of celebrations – from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. Hosted by the German American Societies of San Diego, Inc., this traditional Oktoberfest takes place at 1017 S. Mollison Ave. and will feature authentic German food, a beer garden, games, and family-friendly activities. Also on the agenda: live "Oom-Pah" music from the Bavarian band, Guggenbach-Buam, straight from Baden-Württemberg, Germany, performing classics like polkas, waltzes, and other toe-tapping tunes that pair nicely with a brew or two. Admission costs $10 for attendees 21 and older.
Friday Night Liberty
5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Arts District at Liberty Station
The Arts District at Liberty Station (2640 Decatur Rd.) hosts Friday Night Liberty, a monthly art walk showcasing the working artists, dance, music, and theatre that are helping the district grow in its mission to highlight the arts culture in San Diego. The event is free.
You & Yours Distilling Co. Tour5 p.m., You & Yours Distilling Co.You & Yours Distilling Co. – a small, chic distillery in San Diego’s East Village (1495 G St.) – recently launched tours of its tasting room, available at certain times Wednesday through Sunday (1 p.m. to 5 p.m.). The 45-minute tours are led by a member of the distillery’s team who leads visitors to the production floor, explaining every step of the distilling process – down to the bottling of each product. The tour is followed by a question and answer session and, of course, a spirits tasting flight of the distilleries flagship gin and vodka. San Diego Fashion Week: Runway Shows
6 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Friday & Saturday), Broadway Pier
San Diego Fashion Week (SDFW) is back, shining the spotlight on emerging designers and trends. Running Oct. 4 through Oct. 8, SDFW features runway and trunk shows including Friday and Saturday night’s Fall Runway Shows at Broadway Pier in downtown San Diego. Combined, the shows will highlight the newest collections of 21 designers and also feature music, art and food. VIP parties at the Port Pavilion follow each show. The SDFW Trunk Show will be held Sunday at the Hotel Del Coronado.

Halloween haunts of epic proportions lurk in every corner at The Haunted Hotel located at 424 Market St., near Fourth Avenue, in downtown San Diego. For the past 25 years, this spooky fall attraction has invited brave patrons to make their way through a creepy hotel while trying to flee from all kinds of monsters and ghouls. The Haunted Hotel runs most nights now through Oct. 31; general admission tickets cost $19.

Hops on the Harbor: Craft Beer Dinner Cruise
7 p.m., San Diego Bay
Enjoy craft brews and dinner on San Diego Bay with “Hops on the Harbor,” a cruise from Flagship Cruises and Events. This month, the featured brewer is San Diego’s own Green Flash; the dinner menu is expertly paired with four 6-ounce beer tasters such as Green Flash’s Blonde Ale with chicken picatta, parmesan orzo with asparagus and caesar salad, and the Treasure Chest IPA paired with rosemary roasted top sirloin, German potato salad and spinach salad with roasted butternut squash. The cruise includes views of San Diego’s skyline, the USS Midway, Star of India and other Maritime Museum ships, North Island Naval Air Station and the Coronado Bay Bridge. Tickets cost $69.50 for adults and $41.50 for kids ages 4 to 12; the cruise departs from 990 North Harbor Dr.

Ralph Inzuza: “The Camp”7:30 p.m., Warwick’s La JollaWarwick’s bookstore in La Jolla hosts a book signing with debut author, Ralph Inzuza, who will discuss his new novel, “The Camp.” The story is inspired by real events, emerging from many conversations with inmates serving 10 to 20-year sentences for non-violent offenses at the Atwater Federal Prison Camp in Central California. This event is free.
San Diego Film FestivalTimes and Locations VaryThe San Diego Film Festival returns Oct. 4 through Oct. 8, showcasing the best in independent filmmaking. The five-day fest includes screenings at the Regal Theater Horton Plaza and the ArcLight La Jolla, plus parties, panels and other events with filmmakers. On Friday at 9 p.m., NBC 7’s Bridget Naso will emcee “Party With a Purpose” at Horton Plaza Park, a celebration of films and filmmakers changing the world. The 21+ shindig includes live music, a DJ, yard games, food trucks, and games. Tickets cost $50 ahead of time or $65 at the door. Get the Led Out, a Led Zeppelin tribute band – also known as “The American Led Zeppelin” – rocks out to all of the hits starting at 9 p.m. at the Events Center at Harrah’s Resort Southern California. Tickets to the 21+ concert start at $25.
Ghostly Tours in History
9 p.m., Old Town San Diego State Historic Park
Take a guided, 90-minute “Ghost Tour” in Old Town, exploring all of the history, haunts, and tales that make this landmark unique. The tour includes a visit to the famous Whaley House and the El Campo Santo Cemetery; both sites are said to be home to visitors from beyond. The tour meets at 9 p.m. at Café Coyote on San Diego Avenue; it costs $25.
Saturday, Oct. 7
The Boardwalk Craft Market
8 a.m., Old Poway Park
This unique festival, now in its 25th year, offers Poway residents the chance to shop for unique and useful handmade arts and crafts from local artists. The event is free and fun for the whole family.
Wildlife Tracking Walk
8:30 a.m., Mission Trails Regional Park (Father Junipero Serra Trail)Join experiences tracking team members this Saturday morning for an adventurous walk along the Oak Grove Loop Trail. You’ll learn more about finding and identifying the tracks left behind from some of the seldom-seen critters in the park. 
Ramona Air Fair and Fly-In9 a.m., Ramona AirportThis Saturday in Ramona is all about planes, pilots and more as they annual Ramona Air Fair returns. Bring the whole family out to enjoy tours from Cal Fire and the U.S. Forest Service, airplane displays, tasty food, raffles and live country music. Plus, the Tuskegee Airmen, Red Eagles Formation Team and Chuck Hall will all be at the festival as special guests. Kids can get free face painting, balloons, and piñatas, as well as tethered hot air balloon rides. The event has free admission and parking. 
La Jolla Art and Wine Festival10 a.m. (Saturday and Sunday), Girard AvenueWine, beautiful views, an art center? Winos, take note. This two-day festival returns this weekend and features art from more than 150 acclaimed regional artists. Pair your viewing with one of more than 40 local wines from across Baja region. Money raised will go towards underfunded programs, like art and music, at La Jolla public elementary and middle schools. The festival is free and open to the public.
Maker Fair
10 a.m. (Saturday and Sunday), Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park
Innovation takes center stage at the Maker Faire this weekend. This family-friendly festival is a way for people to share what they are making and for people to learn about what others are sharing, complete with more than 250 makers from around Southern California. Tickets start $15, and a wristband will get you admission to exhibit galleries in the area, as well as circuits at local museums. 
Pacific Beachfest
11 a.m., Pacific Beach Boardwalk (Diamond St. to Thomas St.)
More than 50,000 San Diegans will head out to one of Pacific Beach’s most popular annual festivals. Attendees heading out early can watch competitive surfing and volleyball on the beach. Later in the day, enjoy a “Best Fish Taco” contest, with samples from San Diego’s best restaurants, as well as live music across three stages, a kids action alley, and a craft beer garden. Admission is free. 
Wild Goose Dreams
2 p.m., La Jolla Playhouse
Human connection and love are at the root of an innovative new La Jolla Playhouse piece starring actor James Kyson. Kyson, best known for his work in NBC's "Heroes" and "Hawaii Five-O," stars in "Wild Goose Dreams," a new play written by Hansol Jung and directed by Tony nominee Leigh Silverman. The play follows the journey of South Korean "goose father" Minsung (James Kyson) as he supports his wife and daughter overseas. "Wild Goose Dreams" is a co-production with The Public Theater in New York City. Tickets start at $35.
LEGOLAND Brick-or-Treat Party Night
5 p.m., LEGOLAND (1 Legoland Drive, Carlsbad)Stay extra late at LEGOLAND this Saturday and get into the Halloween spirit with special treats and spooky decorations in the SEA LIFE Aquarium. The event features character meet and greets, costume contests, a dance party and more.

The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey
8 p.m., Old Globe Theatre
This solo show, written and performed by James Lecensne, starts previews tonight at The Old Globe Theatre. The play follows a New Jersey detective eager for a case to get him from behind his desk, and the case that finally does it: the disappearance of teen Leonard Pelkey. Tickets start at $30. The show runs through Oct. 29.
Sunday, Oct. 8

Bring the whole family to get some one-on-one time with camels at San Diego’s Oasis Camel Dairy, a sanctuary in East County. Guests will get the chance to treat the camels with sweet apples, as well as ride the camels and pet animals in a petting farm. Tickets start at $7. 
Taste of the Village
2 p.m., The Village at Pacific Highlands Ranch (Carmel Valley)
Find your inner foodie at this tasting event in Carmel Valley and try bites from some of The Village’s favorite restaurants, including Baked Cear, Nothing Bundt Cake, Breakfast Republic, Luna Grill and more. Tickets cost $25 and includes an art display and performances by students from Canyon Crest Academy. All the proceeds go to CCA.
San Diego Symphony Chamber Music Concert: Jean-Yes Thibaudet
2 p.m., Joan and Irwin Jacobs Music Center
Transport to Paris, if only for a few hours, with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet as he rounds out his opening weekend visit at the symphony with an afternoon of pure Parisian style. The concert will also feature the music of Francis Poulenc, Gabriel Faure and more. Tickets start at $35.
Billy Elliot2 p.m., Spreckels Theatre (121 Broadway)San Diego Musical Theatre and California Ballet team up for this co-production of the Tony Award-winning musical "Billy Elliot," with music by Elton John. The musical, based off the movie of the same name, follows 11-year-old Billy as he stumbles from the boxing ring into a ballet class, discovering his passion and gift for dance. The show runs through Oct. 8.
Coldplay
7 p.m., Qualcomm Stadium
British rock band Coldplay, best known for hits like “Fix You,” “Paradise” and “Yellow,” return to San Diego for a show at Qualcomm this song. The concert will feature the band’s newest songs, trademark visuals and stage antics. Tickets start at $29.
Roz & Ray
7 p.m., San Diego Repertory Theatre (Lyceum Stage)
This time-bending story -- set in San Diego -- shares a profound story of love, trust, and sacrifice as it explores a little-known chapter in American history. The story follows Ray, a devoted single parent who works to keep his twin sons alive, and Roz, the doctor who offers him a cutting-edge miracle treatment. The play is written by Karen Hartman, an award-winning playwright, and native San Diegan. The play runs until Oct. 1. Tickets start at $38. 
Benny & Joon7 p.m., The Old GlobeThe Old Globe's 2017 - 2018 season kicks off with "Benny & Joon," a delightful new world-premiere musical based on the beloved 1993 offbeat romantic comedy. The musical, with a book by Kirsten Guenther ("Breaking Through"), music by Nolan Gasser and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein ("Little Women"), follows auto mechanic Benny(his sister's sole caretaker) and his eclectic sister Joon. The music runs through Oct. 22.
